The Peripheral: Season 1

Image
Based on: 2014 book of the same name by William Gibson Created by: Scott B. Smith Executive Produced by: Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, Athena Wickham, Steve Hoban, and Vincenzo Natali Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz (Flynne), Gary Carr (Wilf), Jack Reynor (Burton), JJ Feild (Lev), T'Nia Miller (Cherise), Louis Herthum (Corbell), Katie Leung (Ash), Chris Coy (Jasper), Eli Goree (Conner), Charlotte Riley (Aelita), Alexandra Billings (Inspector Ainsley) What do I enjoy more than a show with future sci-fi? A show involving travel between  two  separate timelines of future sci-fi!  Set in both a future that is close to present-day and one that's further down the road, The Peripheral  is about a woman (Flynne) in the near future who's contacted by the far-future. Although the intentions of the far-future people are more on the selfish side, Flynne takes the situation into her own hands in an attempt to save ...

Paper Girls

Image
Based on: 2015 comic series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang Created by: Stephany Folsom Starring: Camryn Jones (Tiff), Riley Lai Nelet (Erin), Sofia Rosinsky (Mac), Fina Strazza (KJ), Adina Porter (Prioress), Ali Wong (adult Erin), Nate Corddry (Larry) Of the many sci-fi series cancelled after just one season by various streaming services (looking at you, Netflix and Amazon), I consider Paper Girls  one of the most tragic.  This was one of three great sci-fi series I remember premiering within months of each other, all Amazon originals. If memory serves, the other two were Night Sky  and Outer Range . Only the latter received a second season renewal. (No, I'm not bitter at all, why do you ask?) I believed I've already reviewed the other two, though that might have been before I started waiting for full seasons to air before writing them. Of those three, I found Paper Girls  by far the most compelling....

Cracow Monsters

Image
Directed by: Kasia Adamik and Olga Chajdas  Written by: Anna Sienska, Gaja Grzegorzewska, and Magdalena Lankosz Starring: Barbara Liberek (Alex), Stanislaw Linowski (Lucky), Anna Paliga (Iliana), Andrzej Chyra (Professor Jan Zawadzki), Małgorzata Bela (Aitwar) I really enjoy shows that feature cultural mythology. I'm especially fond of Asian and Native American, but I'll go for most any. So when a friend recommended this series about Polish mythology, it was pretty easy for me to agree!  In basic, Cracow Monsters  is about a university student who becomes targeted by powerful and malevolent supernatural entities that are trying to wreak havoc on Krakow, Poland.  While the production value is impressive and the story is written well, I found my attention waning toward the end of the season for the same reason it does with many other shows: not enough attention to characters by the writers. The show seems to put more emphasis on ...
