Arcane: Season 1 Finale

Image
Created & Written by: Christian Linke, Alex Yee Directed by: Pascal Charrue, Arnaud Delord Starring: Hailee Steinfeld (Vi), Ella Purnell (Powder/Jinx), Mia Jenness (young Powder), Kevin Alejandro (Jayce Talis) Wow.  I wasn't even sure if I was going to watch this one, and I'm so  glad that I did.  I figured I would enjoy it when I first saw it was announced a long time ago, mostly because I knew it was an adaption of the League of Legends world, which is full of magic and fantasy. However, I'm also really not invested in that world, so I figured I'd only go for it if convenient. And it kind of wasn't-- there have been so many  new or returning series premiering over the past month, I thought it would be too much to squeeze another in. But the timing ended up working out, and my goodness, the internet was blowing up with excitement and positive reviews as the first three episodes dropped on Netflix.  I immediately understood why. It took th...

Hawkeye: Series Premiere

Image
Created by: Jonathan Igla Executive producers: Jonathan Igla, Rhys Thomas, Brad Winderbaum, and others Starring: Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop) Why is Marvel so good at writing?  I don't think there's any MCU movie or TV series that isn't really, excellently written. Even just in the first few scenes of this series, I found myself really intrigued by Kate. She has a compelling personality, quirky enough to be fun, and the series immediately gave us a motivation for why she loves Hawkeye: in the midst of terror, she personally witnesses his heroism.  I'll also add that Hawkeye isn't one of my favorite Avengers, so these compliments are being written from a place of very little bias. It's no secret that I love magic and science fiction, so when those take spotlight in a movie or series ( WandaVision ), I'm pretty much automatically going to love it. And that's why I'm not so excited about Hawkeye as a character: he's so ...

Wheel of Time: Season 1

Image
Based on:  The Wheel of Time  by Robert Jordan Developed by: Rafe Judkins Starring: Rosamund Pike (Moiraine), Josha Stradowski (Rand al'Thor), Marcus Rutherford (Perrin Aybara), ZoĆ« Robins (Nynaeve al'Meara), Barney Harris (Mat Cauthon), Madeleine Madden (Egwene al'Vere), and Daniel Henney (al'Lan Mandragoran) Bear with me on this review, because I have no prior exposure to the series and everything is very brand new to me. I'm clinging to every shred of understanding I can, which isn't a lot.  I also watched with my friend Josh who  has  read (most of) the books, and I'll take his word for it that they changed........... a lot.  But I'm no stranger to series adaptions changing a lot; I still watch the live action  Titans  series, and even though my base knowledge for that is the 2000s  Teen Titans  cartoon instead of comics, I still feel justified in feeling fairly affronted at the the changes. But like my willingness to...

Cowboy Bebop (Live Action): Series Premiere

Image
Based on: Cowboy Bebop by Hajime Yatate Developed by: Christopher Yost Starring:  John Cho ( Spike Spiegel),  Mustafa Shakir (Jet Black), Daniella Pineda (Faye Valentine), Elena Satine (Julia), Alex Hassell (Vicious) I have seen the anime before, but it's been quite a while. Probably a several years. And while I really enjoyed it, it didn't leave a huge impact on me, so I don't feel like a large part of my mind is comparing original the adaption as I watch this.  What I did compare, I did as I saw production development: I noticed that the cast looks remarkably like the anime characters. Even Jet, who's a black person, I thought felt like a black person in the anime, even though his skin tone was lighter. I appreciated that Faye's shirt was a bit more conventional, and I thought the pre-released opening credits mirrored the anime to a ridiculous extent. Like, pretty much shot for shot, not to mention identical music and tone.  As someone who's hotly anticip...

Locke & Key Season 2 Finale

Image
Created by: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez Developed by: Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill, and Aron Eli Coleite Starring: Darby Stanchfield (Nina Locke), Connor Jessup (Tyler Locke), Emilia Jones (Kinsey Locke), Jackson Scott (Bode Locke) Although I've really  enjoyed both these seasons overall, I do have some criticisms.  The first season's finale was a bit overly complicated and although I got the gist, it kind of went over my head. In both seasons, I've failed to understand the primary motivation behind the villains. They seem to want the keys, but to what end? I still don't know. Thus, all the Lockes are simply trying to stop them from getting the keys and also keep their family together. And while that's obviously succeeded in creating two great seasons because I do find myself very invested, it's also left me at a bit of a loss. Also, one of the primary plot conflicts is that adults don't remember magic, and this is solved midway through season 2. Ye...

Doctor Who Season 13 Premiere

Image
Created by: Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber, Donald Wilson Written and Produced by: Chris Chibnall Starring: Jodie Whittaker (The Doctor), Mandip Gill (Yaz), John Bishop (Dan Lewis) These have been some of the most promising episodes since Matt Smith's exit.  I just watched "Revolution of the Daleks" before watching this season premiere, and I feel like it set me up well. The return of such a familiar and friendly face as Jack Harkness as a regular in "Revolution" was incredibly pleasant and gave me the excitement, nostalgia, and connection  to characters that I hadn't felt since Smith's era. Specifically, "Angels Take Manhattan," which was the exit of my most favorite companion, Amy Pond. I didn't feel connection to Graham or Ryan, despite spending two seasons with them, and only season 11's "Demons of Punjab" gave me some good connection to Yaz. So I was not upset to be left with only Yaz and 13 for this season, and I'm ho...

Stargirl Season 2 Finale

Image
Created by: Geoff Johns  Produced by: Jennifer Lence Starring: Brec Bassinger (Stargirl), Yvette Monreal (Wildcat), Anjelika Washington (Dr. Mid-Nite), Cameron Gellman (Hourman), Trae Romano (Mike Dugan), Meg DeLacy (Shiv), Amy Smart (Barbara Whitmore), Luke Wilson (Pat Dugan) I've been very impressed by this whole series.  This makes me very happy because the DC universe has had a lot of difficulty lately. Batman vs Superman , Whedon's Justice League , WW84 , both Suicide Squads , and Birds of Prey all felt a lot of hurt from critics and consumers alike, even though I enjoyed all of them personally. Even on the small screen, Titans and CW's whole Arrowverse has felt a lot of criticism and even the acclaimed Swamp Thing was cancelled after its first season.  Of course, most of the recent small screen offerings have been doing well. Fans are loving Doom Patrol ,  Young Justice , and Harley Quinn , the newest CW offering Superman and Lois  has ...
